General Surgery
What is General Surgery?
The surgical specialty that includes a variety or simple and complex procedures to treat a wide range of conditions.
What types of surgery does a general surgeon perform?
The most common procedures involve surgeries within the abdomen (hernias, intestinal, gallbladder, appendix, cancer) as well as skin and soft tissue lesions (lipomas, cysts, moles, melanoma). To see a full list of procedures performed by Dr. Treto, click here.
What should I expect from a consultation?
Your surgeon should be able to describe your condition and the reasoning behind the surgery being offered. All treatment options should be discussed, including the different surgical approaches available (open versus minimally invasive surgery). At times, that may lead to a conversation about why not doing surgery is a better option when considering patient specific factors.
What is a hernia?
A hernia is a defect (or a hole) in the strength layer of the abdominal wall. The abdominal wall consists of multiple layers of muscle wrapped in a tissue called fascia that supports and holds the abdominal organs in place. If a hole develops within the wall, the contents inside will protrude through. The hernia is the hole and the lump felt under the skin are the contents bulging through the hole.
